Q: I've never been a big fan of shaving everytime I have a shower. It takes up way too much time, and can get annoying when I nick myself. I was wondering if laser hair removal is safe and if it's permanent?

-Anonymous

A: It just so happens that if done properly, laser hair removal is very safe and effective. Always ask to see before and after pictures of past clients and ask any questions you may have. If laser hair removal is done by someone who is not qualified, you can end up getting burnt and in turn be left with nasty scars. However, when done by a professional, laser hair removal can be wonderful and significantly reduce hair growth, often permanently. Also, keep in mind that laser hair removal works best on certain skin types, and requires you to have a color contrast between skin and hair color. Generally, you cannot have a dark tan before treatment.

If you're seriously considering treatment, the best thing you can do is call somewhere in your town that performs this service and ask a professional. The wont bite!

Q: I'm only 15, but I want to get a head start on preventing aging skin. I figure that if I start now then I won't get saggy wrinkly skin when I'm 40. What are some good ways to help prevent my skin from aging that someone my age could do?

-Katie

A: It's great to hear that you want to take good care of your skin. Even at 15 there are some things you can do to prevent future aging. Starting a good skin care regime now will ensure you do it out of habit when you get older.

For starters, you need to get used to always wearing your sunscreen! This is likely the most important thing you can start doing.

You can also make sure you're hydrating yourself. Don't think that you only need to drink water when you feel thristy. Aim for 6-8 glasses (8oz glasses) per day depending on your body weight and activity level.

Another thing you can begin to do is use a skin cream containing green tea extract. Green tea is packed with antioxidants, which help keep the skin from aging. At your age, you should be using an oil free moisturizer to prevent breakouts, so look for something oil-free containing green tea. I believe PROACTIV makes a good one!

The next best thing you can do, is make sure you're not a stress case. So please, don't stress out about wrinkles because as we all know, stress isn't healthy and can cause us to age faster than anything! Just have fun and enjoy being young!

Q: I got my hair cut, and it's WAY too short. I don't know what I was thinking, but now I want my long hair back. Suggestions please!

A: We've ALL been here. Just treat it as a lesson learned. In the mean time, you have a couple of options.

If you truly can't stand it, and you don't mind spending some money, you could always look into getting hair extensions. If you're good with hair, or have a friend who is good at that stuff you could just buy some PRE-GLUED extensions off ebay, and a heat wand (to glue them to your hair) and do it yourself. You'll need between 300-400 pieces to do a whole head. In total it would cost about $150-$200 to do it this way. OR, you could go to a professional (about $500-$2000).

If extensions aren't your thing, buy a bunch of clips and learn to use them! If you have bangs, pin them up, wear head bands, put your hair in a high pony tail, anything to hide the fact that it's extremely short.

When you're in the shower, give your scalp a massage to get blood flowing to your scalp which is known to help speed up growth.

Really though, there's nothing you can do to make your hair grow over night. The best thing to do is accept that your long locks are gone, but realize it's not forever. Who knows, maybe the new look will grow on you... hehe.

Q: I got fake nails and hated them. They just didn't suit me, so I ripped them off and now my nails are so brittle and even torn in spots. They look SO grose. HELP!

-Becca

A: Lucky for you, nails grow back pretty fast. There's really not a lot you can do to reverse the damage. While your nails are growing out, rub vaseline over them often to keep them soft and prevent them from chapping or lifting. Also, if there's skin exposed underneath, you have to be sure to wash it all the time to prevent infection.

If this ever happens again, please go back to the salon and ask them to remove the nails. They have a solution that will remove the glue, and won't damage your nail.
